On 27th February, 1918, the 2nd London battalion of 169 Brigade, 56th Division moved into the front line at Gavrelle near Arras where they remained until relieved on 5th March. On 3rd March, Frederick Noble was hit by a machine-gun bullet that night while part of a party putting out ‘knife-rests’, portable sections of wiring, in front of the trenches. He died from his wounds the next day. |
